PlusChem proudly celebrates 25 years of excellence in the chemical distribution industry this year. An idea that started out as a bold experiment, has now grown into a thriving global network that continues to share the future of chemical distribution.

We officially launched in Barcelona in February 2000 which marked the peak of the idea that began in 1999. Two separate chemical companies located in Spain and Italy that shared similar values, suppliers and operational principles came together as it was more beneficial to work as partners. David Salter was invited to become the CEO of this opportunity to bring together independent chemical companies to amplify their influence, strengthen relationships with key partners and create a platform for mutual growth. PlusChem communicated to other businesses by advertising through ‘European Chemical News’, seeking like-minded companies to join their initiative. The response was hopeful as our Irish partner ‘NCC’, and our German partner ‘Goldmann’ soon joined. A previous companion also joined located in France. What began with two founding members quickly expanded to a five-member alliance spanning across Europe.

“It’s something I’m glad to have been associated with for the last 25 years.” – David Salter
CEO David Salter guided PlusChem from its modest beginnings as a Eurocentric organisation into a global powerhouse. Recognising the importance of international growth, we expanded beyond Europe by welcoming members from across the globe. As of today, we have a network of 15 family-owned businesses with a combined turnover of €1.3 billion, compared to the initial €350 million among our five founding members. This remarkable growth highlights our commitment to fostering collaboration while maintaining the independence and heritage of our member companies. One of our defining features is our dedication to family-owned businesses. Out of our 15 members, 13 are multigenerational companies which include histories spanning over two centuries. Our Japanese member company, Andoh Parachemie Co. Ltd is the oldest in the group as it took off in the 1800’s with whale oil production and is now managed by its 6th generation. Similarly, our German member is over 105 years old and in its 4th generation. We provide these companies with the tools and support needed to grow while preserving their independence. This characteristic is a rare trait in such a popular industry dominated by equity investors and large corporations.

The chemical trade faces significant challenges, from environmental regulations to shifting consumer expectations. At PlusChem, we recognise the need to innovate continuously, embracing sustainability and advancing technology to stay ahead. Dr.Salter emphasises that regulatory demands and the focus on green credentials reshaping the industry. We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint, ensuring that our suppliers and customers align with sustainable practices. There are plans to introduce a digital platform that decentralises operations and enhances communication among the 15 members. This initiative is just one example of how we continue to evolve in such a dynamic industry.
Among many of our achievements, we have successfully globalised the agrochemical sector, particularly with foliar nutrients. Foliar nutrients are specialised chemicals sprayed on plant leaves to promote growth. Initially, a niche interest which has become a multimillion-euro business, symbolising the power of collaboration and innovation within PlusChem. We aim to continue these outstanding successes and plan to expand our geographical footprint by welcoming partners from regions such as the Nordic countries, Turkey, South Africa, Korea, Australia and Central America. There is no doubt we will reach these goals as we will continue to enhance our influence and opportunities in the global market. As we look forward to the future, we plan to carry on by empowering family-owned businesses, embracing innovation and continuing to be a leader in the chemical distribution industry. Here’s to celebrating 25 years of success and many more to come.
