One of our chemical categories include ‘Food and feed’, within this section is an element which includes additives for dairy/beverage/health/bakery and confection/ seafood and meat. The additives within food and drink are not only adding taste and extending the shelf life but are also adding nutrition into what people are consuming. I will discuss this statement below along with the names of our members who specialise in this section of the chemical industry. What are additives? Well, according to the ‘World Health Organization’, “Additives are added to ensure processed food remains safe and in good condition throughout its journey from factories or industrial kitchens, to warehouses and shops, and finally to consumers. Additives are also used to modify the sensory properties of foods including taste, smell, texture and appearance.” We has several members who are involved in the ‘food & feed’ sector of our industry and will be mentioned multiple times below. These members are:
- morais de castro
- Afriglobal Commodities (AGC)
- Chemitron
- Goldmann
- Chemet India
- Barcelonesa
- Torchaini
- NCC
As we already considered what an ‘additive’ is, now we will analyse the different food categories and the benefits in which they contribute to the public using them.
Dairy:
“Our Aquamin series is derived from minerals of marine origin, our calcium is extracted from the unique lithothamnion calcareum alga.” – Goldmann
Calcium carbonate is taken when there is not the ideal amount of calcium in one’s body, one of our member companies that sustains this food additive is ‘Goldmann’ . This is similar to another supplement known as ‘calcium caseinate’. Which, taken from Foodadditives.net , is a ‘milk-derived protein and a calcium supplement, commonly used as a food additive in nutritional food.’ This cumulates for the ‘Ca’ mineral people are lacking to consume to meet their desired diet.
Beverages:
Two additives you may find in beverages are citric/ tartaric acid, both of these are used when requiring a taste to drinks such as flavored water. Another additive that can be found in drinks, mostly in carbonated beverages, is benzoic acid. This compound is one that can work as an antitoxin. Have your parents ever given you a warm cup of ‘7up’ or ‘coca cola’ when you were sick as a child? The reason behind this is because it contributes to eliminating the virus in your stomach. The three acids mentioned above are also found on Torchaini’s nutrisciences tab on their website.
Health:
Some of the additives we accommodate are ones which are a huge benefit to improving the life of your customers. The first alternative I will discuss is ‘Fibrean (Multifunctional Vegetable Fibres)’, as found on the Barcelonesa’s website, ‘Fibrean has emerged as a natural solution to reduce sugars and fats, as an alternative to certain allergens or to replace E-coded additives.’
The second additive we assist in is, Ascorbic acid / ascorbate, this additive can be used throughout a variety of foods and beverages. Its purpose is for people who are deficient in Vitamin C, allowing them to build up their health again while also having other additional benefits.
Another example of a health additive is Iron Electrolytic, found in the ‘food & feed’ section of Chemet India . This is used in cereals, especially infant cereals. This element contributes to one’s iron level’s, which is very important to young children and pregnant woman.
Bakery & confectionery:
The main use for additives in the bakery/ confectionery industry is to not only to preserve but to allow them to keep their original taste, add colour, flavour and texture.
Sucralose would be a very popular additive that companies include in their formula. ‘A lot of people think that sucralose is a substitute for sugar when in fact it is a food additive which according to FDA, is 600 times sweeter than your normal table sugar’, so, if you have a sweet tooth, you know where to look.
While sucralose is not a substitute, there is one element that is a replacement in the regards of sugar, known as ‘Fibrean Sugar Reduction’. This not only reduces negative sugars and fats but also increases fibre and protein results. Another supplement for granulated sugar is ‘fructose powder’, which can be acquired through many of our members, one being Morais de Castro.
“Fibrean Sugar Reduction is an ideal solution for food industries to reach their targets by reducing sugars and increasing fibre with a single ingredient.” – Barcelonesa
Our members at Torchaini also provide liquid preservatives for baked goods. This is a very beneficial additive for companies specialising in bakery products.
Seafood & meat:
‘Products like Lactic Acid, Lactates and Rosemary Extract are just some of the exciting and innovative solutions we provide.’ – NCC
We supply all the additives mentioned already, as well as the rosemary extract stated above. As explained by Knowde, ‘rosemary extract is used in the food industry for preservation, color protection, oil stabilization, and meat flavoring stabilization. Rosemary extract is safe, efficient, and heat-resistant.’ This indicates how important these additives are in our food industry and how much of an advantage other companies can achieve while using these.
This blog shares the individual powers of the additives mentioned. Unfortunately, I was unable to list all the additives we have available as there are so many. So, please feel free to leave an enquiry here and we will get back to you shortly. I hope you enjoyed reading this blog.
